Second edition. Coles wrote many poems, hymns, various reviews and papers both literary and medical. He wrote The Microcosm, a poem about “the most necessary, and yet, strange to say, that most neglected of all the sciences, the science of the human body,” while he was president of the New Jersey Medical Society. Also included are poems on the cosmos, Christmas, and friendship. He is well known for his rendering of Dies Irae, 1874 of which he made 17 original versions. Among his other works are Latin hymns with Oriental translations, A new rendering of the Hebrew psalms into English verse, and The Evangel. He was awarded the Harsen Medal in 1867.

Physician, hymnologist and poet, Coles (1813-91) first studied law before settling upon medicine. He received his MD from Jefferson Medical College, and settled into practice in Newark, New Jersey.
