First edition. Birney (1825-1864), the son of noted abolitionist James Gillespie Birney, graduated from Andover Academy and became an attorney in Philadelphia. After a promotion to brigadier general of volunteers, he became a major general in the Union army, commanding the 1st Division of the 3rd Corps at Gettysburg. He was ultimately given command of the 10th Corps. Birney died of malaria while in Philadelphia. This authorized biography by his law partner Oliver Wilson Davis provides a great amount of detail about camp life during the war.
