Second edition of this address on the subject of continuity, delivered by the Association’s president at Nottingham in 1866. He discusses current trends in science, citing recent works by Le Verrier, Berthellot, Tyndall, Herschel, Lavoisier, Pasteur, and Darwin, among others.

Grove (1811-1896) was a barrister and scientist interested in the emerging field of electro-chemistry. He is best known for developing fuel cell technology, which would later lead to the concept of energy conservation.
