Contemporary blind-stamped brown pebbled cloth pictorial boards, rebacked with new endpapers and a pocket. One of the maps (very fragile, crudely repaired) is in the pocket at the front of the book (along with a separate map not included in the “list of illustrations”), the other 3 maps misbound; many of the plates (including the frontispiece) have tissue guards. Text block lightly browned, some foxing on a few pages. Fly-leaf inscribed “J C Cook, So. Boston, Mar. 24, 1860. Sold to C. S. Wates June 1874” and another ownership incription of J C Cook dated 1859. Item #15256
Author’s edition, first published the prior year. This is the record of the search to determine the fate of the Franklin Arctic expedition. Lady Jane Franklin spent her own funds outfitting the Fox, and McClintock, along with the other officers, offered their services for free. They returned to England in 1859 with evidence of Franklin’s death and the fate of the ships and crew. Included is a facsimile of the record found of Franklin’s expedition.
