First edition of this valuable French contribution to medical history. It is a well written detailed description of all diseases and doctrines from the ancients through the modern period, and includes the author's own theories and observations. Bouchut was part of the "seminalism"or "vitalistic" school in nothing is granted to hypothesis, and everything to observation. He wrote on the use of the ophthalmoscope in diagnosing neural diseases, published on neurathenia, and tried to introduce incubation in France.
Bouchut (1818-91) was a versatile physician, a professor and lecturer at Paris. He wrote on many subjects including pediatrics, skin diseases, life and death, the nervous system, and a dictionary of therapeutics.
