Among the important papers are: Acts of Incorporation of the Illinois Central Railroad Company by the State of Illinois; Letters, Recipts from the treasurer of the State of Illinois for $200,000, Deeds, Financial plan, submitted by the President, and report of the president to the Directors, Mortgage, Illinois Central Railroad., its position and prospects, On the value of public lands of Illinois, a folding copy of the Construction bonds to be issued, and many other documents.

A fine copy of this beautiful map with an engraved leaf pattern border.

The maps: "La Libertad," a Mexican port on the Gulf of California, taken from an 1861 Mexican map; "Sketch of Lobos Bay," drawn under the direction of Major Fergusson; and "Head Quarters Department of New Mexico," showing the southwest United States and the northwest of Mexico, including portions of Baja California and the Gulf of California. First edition of the original corporation consolidated in July 1869, with the Indianapolis Crawfordsville & Danville Railroad. Later (1879) it passed into the hands of a receiver, was sold under foreclosure and reorgaized in 1879.

HISTORY OF THE FIRST LOCOMOTIVES IN AMERICA. By William Henry Brown. Philadelphia: Barclay & Co., [1877]. 8vo. 48 pages With 2 panorama illustrations, 9-1/2 x 18 containing 7 plates. Original illustrated wrappers, very fragile; it is complete but needs re-sewing. According to the author, this is the first and only edition of this format called the popular edition. It is different from the original hard copy of over 200 pages, and was issued for another reader. It was probably sold in train stations and is now quite scarce.

It is in essence a tourist's guide covering the United States from Colorado to Florida, with charming illustrations.

[xxxvi] pp. Original publisher's pebbled cloth, title and Compliments of the Illinois Central Railroad Company in gilt on front cover. Binding and spine scuffed with light chipping on spine; interior is very good. First edition, first issue, limited to 200 copies, ours being 140. MAY, 1905. This keepsake from the Railroad Company contains illustrations and facsimiles of Company-related documents. The text provides details of certain legal issues and cases in which Lincoln was involved on behalf of the Company. (Monaghan, 1447).
