First edition of this series of humorous travel sketches from a physician’s point of view. Titles include Over the Pahri; Asirvadam, the Brahmin; and The Baboo’s Nautch. Palmer (1825-1906) moved from New York to San Francisco where he served for about a year as a physician for the city. He then traveled to China and around the far east stopping first in Hawaii, before touring as a surgeon to the East India Company in the second Burmese War. Upon his return to America, he gave up practicing medicine for his literary pursuits, later becoming know as a poet. Cushing, P36.
