First published edition, binding B, of what is considered Mitchell’s greatest work. A historical novel, it is set in Philadelphia during the American Revolution. After the book was printed and bound in 1896, a decision was made to postpone its publication and to first run it serially in the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. The present edition differs from the pre-publication edition in that the titles pages are cancels, with the new date of 1897, and frontispieces were inserted.
