First edition. Contains translations into English of quatrains by some well-known poets, such as Goethe, Hedylus, and Saadi, as well as many of Marvin’s own work. The original quatrains by Marvin appear here for the first time in print. Marvin (1847-1918) was an American clergyman and poet. Originally intending to practice medicine, he earned his MD at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City, after which he became a professor at the New York Free Medical College for Women. After three years of teaching, he entered the Dutch Reformed Seminary in New Brunswick and became ordained as a minister. Aside from being known for his theological works, he was also known as a man of letters, being the author of many books and poems.
