First issue of the first American edition. “Each chapter describes a different kind of relationship - - - the ‘knots’ of the title - - - bonds of love, dependency, uncertainty, jealousy.” The title not only describes the content of the poems, but also the sometimes unusual form of the printing on each page. Laing (b. 1927) studied medicine at Glasgow University, practicing as a physician at the Glasgow Royal Mental Hospital and serving as a psychiatrist in the British army before going into private practice.
