London: George Routledge & Co., 1850. 12mo. viii, 296 pp. Half-calf and marbled boards, edges sprinkled; end-papers lightly spotted. Item #11937

Second English edition of the author’s first novel, the tale of a journey to Africa where our hero discovers a mythical country, and even marries an African princess. A significant portion focuses on Romer’s medical studies as well as his experiences as a ship doctor. An extremely popular work, it went through nine editions between 1849 and 1900. Mayo (1812-95) studied medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City. After practicing for several years, Mayo took a break, touring Spain and North Africa, a trip which greatly influenced the present work. Afterwards, Mayo returned to New York to devote himself to literature.
