Illustrations by Lajos Szalay. The Cherry Orchard is Chekhov's last play, written in 1903-04 when he was dying of tuberculosis. It follows the fortunes and misfortunes of a Madame Ranyevskya and her family. Three sisters is “his most profound dramatic work . . . is a perfect example of the author’s indirect -action technique, dealing with the mysteries of man’s soul, the purpose of his existence, and the values of life ” (Sandglass, Number II: 32).
