First American edition. All but the last six chapters of The guardian angel appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, as Holmes had them printed in Canada. Why Canada? In order to gain British copyright over them, so he could thwart the plans of the London printing company Ward, Lock & Tyler to print his book without paying him a cent. BAL, 8857; C&T, p. 129.
