The history (of the rise and progress) of the United State of North America.

Contemporary half mottled calf over marbled boards, spine with 5 raised bands with gilt-tooled panes, spine labels; marbled endpapers, all edges yellow. An attractive set. Item #12748

First editions, quite scarce in the complete set. The first two volumes, published in 1827, cover the years up to 1688. The latter two volumes were published by a different publisher in 1836 with a minor change to the main title, removing the words "of the rise and progress."

Grahame was a British historian, and despite having never visited America, received stellar reviews and critiques for this work. Its style has been praised as excellent and it is said to contain passages of great suggestiveness.
