First edition of this important monograph on chronic nephritis, Bright’s disease, and its treatment, based on the author’s observation of eighty cases. This is one of the earliest works on kidney disease to incorporate histology, using microscopic research to build on Bright’s work. Frerichs clarifies that what had been identified as types of Bright’s disease were actually three stages of it. He goes on to trace the disease to the passage of protein into the urine. Also valuable is the author’s treatment of general pathology in this text. “The chapter on the nature of disease is of great interest as expressing the philosophy of the time” (Bloomfield).
Frerichs (1819-1885), one of the founders of experimental pathology, began his career as an opthalmologist before going on to practice general medicine. He led a group of clinicians who devoted themselves to the study of physiology of specific organ pathology, mentoring important pathologists such as Josef von Mering (1849-1907) and Oscar Minkowski (1858-1931), whose work on the production of artificial pancreatic diabetes was essential to advancements in the treatment of the disease. His work was honored in 1859 when he was asked to succeed German naturalist and professor of medicine Johann Lukas Sch nlein (1793-1864), then the country’s leading clinician, as head physician at the Cherit in Berlin. He would continue to have an accomplished career in the field of pathology during which he led notable studies on diseases of the liver, kidneys, and communicable diseases such as malaria.
