First American edition. The author (1796-1855), an English geologist and anthropologist, was the first director of the Geological Survey of Great Britain. He was a pioneer of early methods of geological survey, publishing numerous books, although he was also well-known for his cartoons and other drawings. This book, first published in London the same year, was an enlargement of an earlier work entitled How to observe geology (1835).
