First American edition of one of the author’s best known works in which he discusses ideas of civilization and human progress throughout our history. “The idea of human progress then is a theory which involves a synthesis of the past and a prophecy of the future. It is based on an interpretation of history which regards men as slowly advancing . . . in a definite and desirable direction, and infers that this progress will continue indefinitely.”
Bury (1861-1927) was an Irish historian interested in late antiquity and is widely credited with reviving the topic of Byzantine history.
