Though she began her career writing poetry and children’s stories, Sara Jane Lippincott (1823–1904) later became the first paid female reporter for the New York Times. It was probably while on assignment for this publication that she wrote the letters that now make up the present volume, following her “Grand Tour” journey through Great Britain, France, Italy, and Bavaria.
