The uncorrect proof. Bessie Lillian Gordy Carter (1898-1983) was the mother of President Jimmy Carter. An extraordinary person and influential humanitarian in her own right, Carter joined the Peace Corps when she was 68 years old and was sent to Godrej Colony, India, where she worked with lepers. These letters were composed during her two years as a volunteer there and were compiled and published by Carter’s eldest daughter, Gloria Carter Spann.
