Based upon letters he wrote home, Harrison chronicles his journey around the world beginning in 1877. Along with his 18-year-old son William and a 17-year-old friend, Harrison describes the many countries they visited, including the people, natural history, food, culture, customs and much more. Their trip began in Chicago, from which they travel across Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, then to Japan, China, Southeast Asia, India, and on to Europe, ending up in London. Details of floating boats, beautiful women, religious ceremonies, spanning Himilayan vistas, temples and local flora provide a stirring first-hand account of what was decidedly a monumental vacation.

Harrison (1825-1893), a cousin to President William Henry Harrison, was a United States Congressman and mayor of Chicago.
