Much of the material is quite appropriate to the mid-nineteenth century prior to the Civil War. Hufeland (1762-1836) was court physician at Weimar and personal physician and friend of Goethe, Schiller, and Herder. He corrected the popular misconceptions about Mesmerism and phrenology.
