Paris: Simonneau, Graveur, 1839. Contemporary roan-backed marbled boards, spine and edges worn; title page with waterstain damage, and other than some very small tears at the edges (not affecting any of the images), the plates are in beautiful condition. Item #16061
The first edition of this work was published in 1815 with only six plates. A small volume of an elementary text was subsequently published, but as is most often the case in nearly all known copies, the work is presented as the plates only without text. The plates illustrate the solar system, the orbit of the Earth’s annual revolution around the sun with the indication of the seasons, the different positions of the Earth in relation to the sun during each month of the year, the phases of the moon, eclipses of both the sun and the moon, the tides and a view of the interior of the Earth.
