London: Sir Richard Phillips and Co., 1821. 8vo. 102 pp. FIRST EDITION. Complete with large folding map. Aside from the couple tears in the folds of the map having been repaired, a very good copy rebound in half-calf over marbled boards. Item #16775

First edition. Schoolcraft provides an excellent day-to-day narrative of his travels into what is now primarily Oklahoma after leaving the lead mines of Missouri (which he described in his earlier work of 1819). The folding map shows the various waterways flowing from and to the Mississippi River.

Schoolcraft (1793-1864) was an American geologist and ethnologist. He traveled up the Mississippi to locate its headwaters at Lake Itasca. As superintendent of Indian Affiars for Michigan, he supervised the treaty by which the Chippewa ceded much of northern Michigan to the United States. His Myth of Hiawatha was the source for Longfellow’s iconic poem.
