A significant portion focuses on Romer’s medical studies as well as his experiences as a ship doctor. An extremely popular work, it went through nine editions between 1849 and 1900. Mayo (1812-95) studied medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City. After practicing for several years, Mayo took a break, touring Spain and North Africa, a trip which greatly influenced the present work.
