First edition, though a later printing ($15.95 on jacket) of this delightful children’s book about Homer, a simple farm pigeon who has to navigate his way through the dangers of the big city. In his efforts to return home to the farm, Homer learns how to help others and make friends. Peet’s children’s books are known for their illustrations and his writing. He did not simplify the language of his books, but rather encouraged children to determine the meaning of sentences and words through context clues. The intelligent text embedded with life lessons along with the illustrations were extremely popular among children.
Peet (1915–2002) was an American children’s book writer and illustrator. He was also an animator for Walt Disney and worked on films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Fantasia and Dumbo. After leaving Disney over a disagreement during animating The Jungle Book, Peet began his producing children’s books in earnest. Many are original stories that he would tell his own children at bedtime.
