First edition. The illustrations include the frontispiece of Andreas Vesalius, Rembrandt’s painting of Nicholas Tulp and his pupils entitled “Lesson in Anatomy” and an illustrations of Harvey’s demonstration of the circulation of the blood to Charles I.
Coles (1813-1891) was a physician and poet from New Jersey who published a number of books of prose and poetry. The Medical Society of New Jersey, founded in 1766, is the oldest professional society in America.
