First edition, rare, of Gregg’s shorthand version of Carroll’s classic, identified b the code D83 on the verso of the title page. The text includes "43 uncredited illustrations, including 24 partial Tenniel illustrations, 23 reduced Thomas Maybank illustrations, and 6 others.

This form of shorthand was invented by John Robert Gregg (1867-1948) in 1888. Gregg, along with Pitman shorthand, share significant predominance over other English shorthand systems. Pitman uses line thickness and position to discriminate between two similar sounds, but Gregg shorthand uses the same thickness throughout and discriminates between similar sounds by the length of the stroke.
