New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1908. 8vo. xvi, 410, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. With 34 illustrations. Publisher’s cloth, author and title in gilt on front cover and spine. A fine copy from the library of Owen & Miriam Gingerinch with their large bookplate and small stamp of the Tredyffrin Observatory. Item #19700

First edition of Maunder’s commentary on astronomical allusions in the Bible. He feels that the importance in making these observations is necessitated by efforts to date the books and events of the Bible as well as to discuss in depth the many factual and quasi-factual biblical depictions of people, nations and events. Starting with his own thoughts on creation, Maunder skips across the centuries to treat positions of the sun, stars, constellations and planets throughout the Bible in conjunction with the recitation of events. Of particular interest is the discussion of three astronomical “marvels,” Joshua’s long day, the Dial of Ahaz and the Star of Bethlehem.
