Item #20096
First and only edition of the most remarkable work on military medicine. These volumes contain a detailed overview of medical and surgical conditions encountered during the Civil War. The work was prepared under the direction of Army Surgeon General Barnes but was actually written and compiled by Woodward (1833-1884), Otis (1830-1881), Charles Smart (1841-1905), and David L. Huntington (1834-1899). The set is illustrated with hundreds of tinted lithographs, and especially noteworthy are the numerous chromolithographs by Julius Bien of histologic and pathologic studies by Edward Stauch and paintings by Herman Faber.
Among the classic contributions is Woodward’s monograph on diarrhea and dysentEry, which Garrison considers as the greatest single monograph on the subject (G&M, 5185).
