First American edition, which, according to the author's preface, is only a part of a more extensive work entitled Arcadia. The author states that his traveller arrives in Arcadia from Egypt after visiting Gaul, one of the many nations that are representative of the three states of barbarity, civilization and corruption.

Saint-Pierre (1737-1814) was a French writer, botanist, and member of the Institut de France, the predecessor of the Académie Française. He is best known for his 1787 novel Paul et Virginie.
