First edition of Royle's valuable work on the fibrous plants of India, especially his study of hemp Royle (1799-1858) was a British botanist and teacher of materia medica. He was an assistant surgeon at the East India Company and devoted himself to studying botany and geology. Later he was professor of materia medica in Kings College, London. He was also distinguished in the field of Economic, and his chief contribution to the latter having been a folio volume entitled Illustrations of the Botany of the Himalaya Mountains. Of interest is his correspondence with Charles Darwin.
