First edition. This is the index volume to the Meserve collection of original photographs and negatives, which itself includes ten mounted photographs from the original negatives. The complete series of twenty-eight books contained nearly eight thousand photographic portraits and views for the most part of the Civil War period printed directly from the original negatives. Included are photographs of Lincoln, John James Audubon, Edwin Booth, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clay, Ulysses S. Grant, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Robert E. Lee, Adah Isaacs Menken, Francis Parkman, and Daniel Webster.
Monaghan suggests that only sixteen copies of the complete set of the collection were produced.
