First editions. These three volumes are the first to be included in Volume 41 of Park’s (1759-1834) 48-volume opus, The works of the British poets, collated with the best editions, 1805-08. Smollett (1721-71) was apprenticed at a young age to a Glasgow doctor, and completed his medical studies at Glasgow University. He spent some time as a ship’s surgeon in the Carragena expedition in the West Indies and lived for some time in Jamaica. He later returned to London, where he abandoned his medical background to work in the literary field. Despite the success of his novels, Smollett was ever short of money, and supplemented his income by performing translations as well as editing, most notably for the works of Voltaire. BMC, XXIII, 23; BMC, IV, 218; BMC, XV, 935; NCBEL, 3, 1662.
