First edition. “An engrossing novel about a vast metropolitan hospital and the fast breaking life-and-death dramas that are the daily experience of those who run it.” Slaughter (1908-2001), a best-selling novelist, was a physician who earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins at the age of twenty-two. He spent four years in surgical training at the Jefferson Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. After serving in the United States Medical Corps during World War II, he completely devoted himself to writing, producing on average one novel a year. His books are largely based upon his experiences as a physician and reflect his interests in history as well as in biblical studies.
