First edition. Yancey (1814-1863) was a state legislator in Alabama, elected to Congress before he resigned to lead the successionist movement. Following Lincoln's election, Yancey directed the proceedings of the Alabama convention and authored the ordinance of secession. He was even sent overseas by Jefferson Davis in an attempt to gain recognition of the Confederate government.
