Two volumes. 4to. 652; 648 pp. Frontispiece portraits of Lincoln (Vol. I) and Grant (Vol. II), 47 full-page steel engravings, tissue guards all present, plus double-page colored map of the United States. Half-morocco over cloth boards, corners frayed, title in gilt on covers, spine with 5 raised bands, yellow end-papers, all edges gilt. Stamp of Geo. C. Fisk, Brightwood, on fly-leaves. Overall an excellent copy. $350.00

Later edition of Volume I and first edition of Volume II. A very readable work encompassing pre-Civil War posturing by the States and their politicians through the end of hostilities. Crafts (1819-1906) spends a great deal of time and effort on Lincoln's cabinet and the military leaders on both sides of the conflict.
