First edition of a valuable work on diseases that commonly attack seamen. Divided into two parts, the first deals with a number of prevalent diseases at sea: scurvy, seasickness, rheumatism, various fevers, and venereal diseases. The second section treats of external problems: fractures, drowning, hernias, burns. Other chapters are devoted to hygiene, tropical diseases in the French colonies of West Indies, and recipes for medicines.
Dr, Mauran, "master of arts in surgery," apparently had not read James Lind's Treatise of the Scurvy (1753) describing the juice of lemons for the prevention of scurvy, for he added, "je ne connois alors de meilleurs remedes à prescrire que ceux du sieur Moret, qui sont très renommés pour cette maladie."
This important work appears to be unknown to biographers.
