Thomson (1746-1817) began his career a librarian at Dupplin Castle and eventually studied theology at St. Andrews, “but soon displayed tastes and affinities discordant with his office” (DNB). Thomson became a prolific writer who wrote and edited a great number of books and articles including several popular works of history and travel.
