A LOVELY COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. First edition, state B (see Neville). Always the perfectionist, Macquer originally published this work anonymously “because he was concerned that his reputation might suffer as he had not been able to make it as perfect as he wished” (Neville). Fortunately for the author this work was an instant success and inspired several editions and translations as well as many pirated copies. “By far the most important of Macquer’s works: there had been technical dictionaries before but this was the first dictionary of theoretical and general chemistry; its success soon produced many imitators” (Duveen).
