First edition. Sechenov's theory of cerebral behaviour mechanisms was the basis for the development of neurophysiology and objective psychology in Russia, as well as the investigations of Pavlov and Bekhterev. This work contains Sechenov's discoveries that higher brain function is a material reflex consisting of three sectors: pleasure, fear and distress. He conceived that inhibition could be learned and as a person matured the degree of inhibition increased. The government attempted to censor his work and destroy the published materials, but through these lectures he disseminated his ideas amongst university students and earned himself the title of "father of Russian physiology."
