It was the catalyst to a mathematical revival in England at the beginning of the nineteenth century. When Babbage, Peacock, and Herschel formed the Analytical Society in 1812 in order to introduce English students to the vast storehouse of continental discoveries, one of their earliest undertakings was the translation of this work.
